Nigeria Launches Major Initiative to Train 100,000 Young Women in Tech Careers

A new landmark initiative called Naija Girls in Tech (NGiT) has been launched to bridge the gender gap in Nigeria’s booming digital economy by training 100,000 girls and young women with essential technology skills by 2030.

The programme, announced by Olufunmilayo Ogunwo-Adesanya, a tech and social impact leader, aims not only to provide tech training but also to enhance confidence, career readiness, mentorship, and economic empowerment for women across Nigeria and Africa.

Why This Matters for Nigerian Tech Growth

Nigeria’s tech ecosystem — one of the fastest-growing in Africa — continues to expand rapidly, with strong demand for professionals in fields like cybersecurity, software development, data science, and digital business. However, women remain significantly underrepresented in these areas.

NGiT seeks to change that by offering accessible, practical training and real career pathways to young women aged 16–35, including those from underserved communities, early career professionals, and those transitioning from non-tech fields.

What the Programme Offers

The initiative emphasizes not just digital skills training, but also:

  1. Mentorship from industry professionals
  2. Hands-on tech skills and cybersecurity training
  3. Career readiness and job placement support
  4. Partnerships with tech companies and educational institutions
  5. Professional certifications and internship pathways

These elements combine to create a sustainable pipeline for women to thrive in tech, rather than one-off workshops or short courses.

Partnerships to Support the Vision

NGiT plans to work with a wide range of collaborators, including:

✔ Tech companies
✔ Training providers
✔ Educational institutions
✔ Media platforms
✔ Government and policy stakeholders

These partnerships will help develop curriculum delivery, mentorship frameworks, and real employment opportunities.

The organisation is also seeking government collaboration on capacity building, policy alignment, funding, infrastructure, and talent placement — illustrating a multi-sector approach to women’s tech empowerment.

Who Can Benefit From the Programme

The initiative is designed for:

  • Secondary and tertiary students interested in tech careers
  • Recent graduates and early-career professionals
  • Women from low-income or underserved communities
  • Individuals transitioning from non-tech jobs into digital roles
  • People with disabilities passionate about tech careers

Why This Is Big News for Tech and Jobs

This programme aligns with a broader push in Nigeria toward closing the digital skills gap. Other initiatives across the country also reflect growing momentum:

  • Broader training efforts like Skillup Imo targeting 300,000 digital learners.  Contact: 0903 7672796 for more details
  • Workforce skilling projects such as the Young Africa Innovates Programme empowering innovators across states.
  • Growth of bootcamps and accelerators like ALX Nigeria, which has trained tens of thousands in tech skills.

Together, these efforts demonstrate a rising ecosystem of career opportunities, training, and entrepreneurial support for tech professionals in Nigeria.

Looking Ahead: What’s Next

With its ambitious Vision 2030 goal, Naija Girls in Tech hopes to produce not just job-ready graduates but future leaders, innovators, creators, and tech business founders. As the digital landscape evolves, empowering women at scale will be key to Nigeria’s economic growth and global competitiveness.
